Highweight Brother Louie Draws Outside Post for NM State University 'Cap

Brother Louie, the 121-pound highweight and 3-1 morning-line favorite, drew post 12 for Sunday's $110,000 New Mexico State University Handicap (R) for state-breds at Sunland Park.

A 5-year-old gelding by the Green Dancer stallion Emerald Jig racing for Solitaire Stables, Lisa Dominguez, and Carlos Gutierrez, Brother Louie is coming off of a 1 3/4-length victory in a one-mile second-level allowance for New Mexico-breds on February 3. Brother Louie has won five of 30 starts and has earned $199,554, and his recent record includes a second-place finish to Cross Chris Run in the 1-mile, $180,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park on October 30.

Other contenders in the 1-mile and 70-yard New Mexico State University Handicap include Attitude E Racer and Nuggets Please. Attitude E Racer is campaigned by Michael C. Stinson, and the 4-year-old Desert God gelding has banked $170,964 from 12 outs, and his three wins include last year's 6 1/2-furlong, $85,000 Dine Stakes (R) for state-bred sophomore colts and geldings at SunRay Park, and the 1 1/16-mile, $100,000 New Mexico Breeders' Derby (R) at Sunland.

Nuggets Please is a 5-year-old gelding by Prospector Jones racing for Solitaire Stable and Philip G. and Deborah Troost. A two-time winner during last year's Zia Park meet, Nuggets Please is coming off of a neck victory as the 9-5 choice in a 6 1/2-furlong state-bred allowance sprint at Sunland on February 11.

Also, Double Smart will be seeking his first stakes win since May 7, when he won the $100,000 Jack Cole Handicap (R) at SunRay. Glen Murphy, the leading jockey at the recently concluded Sam Houston Race Park meet, has been named to ride the 6-year-old Premeditation gelding for owners Roger K. Beasley and Leach Racing LLC.

The complete lineup for the New Mexico State University Handicap, in post position order include jockey and weight assignments and morning-line odds – Soaring Goddess (Duane Sterling, 117), 20-1; Max Bean (Alfredo Juarez Jr., 119), 8-1; Attitude E Racer (Ry Eikleberry, 120), 4-1; Spinning Touch (Kevin Smith, 117), 20-1; On Down The Road (Ken Tohill, 118), 12-1; Desert Gamble (Brayan Velazquez, 118), 20-1; Lesters Secret (Vicente Grajeda, 119), 12-1; Nuggets Please (Miguel Hernandez, 120), 5-1; Rig's Runner (Macario Rodriguez, 119), 6-1; Double Smart (Glen Murphy, 117), 15-1; Daddy O. (Alejandro Medellin, 118), 10-1; and Brother Louie (Enrique Gomez, 121), 3-1.
