RSS Feeds Sunday, July 03, 2011

The lone mare in the field of eight aged New Mexico-bred sprinters, Jenuine Joy sprinted to a neck victory in Sunday's $85,000 Tommy “Duke” Smith Handicap (RG2) at SunRay Park.

Jenuine Joy is a homebred 5-year-old gray homebred daughter of Genuine Strawfly racing for Fredda Draper of Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico, and trained the owner's husband, Carl Draper. Ridden by Larry Payne, Jenuine Joy covered 400 yards in :19.087, earning a 104 speed index and breaking by 35/1000ths of a second the previous stakes record set last year by Victor R. Diaz's Salt On The Side.

Jenuine Joy's clocking was also just 7/100ths off of the SunRay Park track record.

Jenuine Joy's sire, Genuine Strawfly, is a 12-year-old stallion by the late Special Effort stallion Strawfly Special. Racing from 2001-02, Genuine Strawfly earned $181,091 from 11 starts, and his four wins included the '02 All American (G1) and Ruidoso (G2) derbies at Ruidoso Downs.

Genuine Strawfly's half brother, the Corona Cartel gelding Corona High, won the 2008 La Plata Stakes (G3) at SunRay Park, and his half sister, the winning Dean Miracle mare Forsentimentlreasons, ran second in the '05 Lou Wooten Handicap (RG1) at Sunland Park. The stallion's top runners include graded stakes winners One Diamond Kitty, Here Kittykittykitty, and Genuine Streaker.

Genuine Strawfly's runners have earned more than $4.08 million and include One Diamond Kitty, Here Kittykittykitty, and Genuine Streaker. He is owned by J & L Stables LLC and Fredda Draper and stands for a $2,000 fee at Dr. Leonard Blach's Buena Suerte Equine in Roswell, New Mexico.

Jenuine Joy's dam, Super Perla Negra, is a winning 14-year-old New Mexico-bred daughter of the Coup de Kas (TB) stallion Super Duper Couper.

The winner's share of the Tommy “Duke” Smith Handicap, named to honor the memory of the former longtime sports editor of the Farmington Daily Times, pushed Jenuine Joy's bankroll to $298,900, of which $119,500 has been earned this year. The mare was coming off of a third-place finish, a neck behind winner Full Moon Dasher, in the 400-yard, $85,000 Four Corners Senora Stakes (R) for state-bred distaffers at SunRay Park on May 1.

All told, Jenuine Joy has won seven of her 10 outs while racing exclusively in New Mexico. Her four stakes victories include the March 13, 350-yard Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park, and last year's 400-yard, $120,000 Lou Wooten Handicap (RG1) at Sunland.

Miracle Snow ran second and was followed by Dueling Juan, In Famous Caper, Genuine American, Tricks My Pick, Primvvera, and Famous Paint.

A bay 7-year-old gelding by 1998 AQHA champion aged stallion Dean Miracle, Miracle Snow has earned $358,180 from 10 wins in 39 outs for his owners and breeders, Melvin and Mary Neugebauer. Miracle Snow has won two stakes, including last year's 400-yard, $40,000 Lineage Championship Stakes (RG3) for state-breds at The Downs at Albuquerque, and he ran third in Mister WW's '06 Shue Fly Stakes (RG1) at Sunland.

Dueling Juan finished a half of a length behind Jenuine Joy. Campaigned by A & F Racing LLC, Argoitia, and Fotou, the 8-year-old Dooley Authorized gelding has won 14 of 51 races and has banked $421,383 while racing exclusively in New Mexico. Dueling Juan won two stakes during the 2006-07 Sunland Park meet, including the '07 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG1).
