RSS Feeds Friday, June 03, 2011

Sammy James, a sorrel colt by the stakes-winning Mr Jess Perry colt Jesse James Jr, won the fifth of eight Mountain Top Futurity (RG2) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Friday, and he is the fastest qualifier to the $276,000 final for New Mexico-breds on June 19.

Ridden by Ricky Ramirez for owner Isbell Charolais and trainer Blane Wood, Sammy James defeated second-fastest qualifier Call Me A Blazn Chic by three-quarters of a length while going 350 yards in :17.550. The colt's victory was his first in two starts, and it pushed his earnings to $2,500.

Sammy James was bred by Linda Joiner and MJ Farms. The colt's dam, the winning 8-year-old Blushing Bug mare Lagaria, ran second to Dash Ta Moon in the 2006 New Mexico Fillies & Mares Championship Stakes (R) at Zia Park.

Call Me A Blazin Chic was clocked in :17.661 for his runner-up effort. The brown filly by Chicks A Blazin has banked $1,970 from two outs for her owner, J & M Racing and Farm.
