Jockey Alfredo Juarez Wins Four Races on Zia Day
RSS Feeds Sunday, July 28, 2013
Jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr. rode the winners of four races on Sunday's 11-race Zia Festival program at Ruidoso Downs.

Juarez's winners all came on Thoroughbreds – Roll Out The Band in the $191,150 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) for 2-year-old colts and geldings, Devons Ca Ching in the $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for 3-year-old colts and geldings, That's Who in the $50,000 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) for 3-year-olds and older, and Anzaki in the $30,000 Sierra Blanca Handicap (R) for 3-year-olds and older.

“Three races is the most I've ever won on Zia Day, and I almost won a fourth but I lost that race by a nose,” Juarez recalled. “That was an exciting day, but this is a kind of record for me.”

Juarez's four wins came from seven mounts, all in Thoroughbred races.

On the Quarter Horse side, trainer Juan M. Gonzalez won the 400-yard Zia Futurity for the fourth time in the last seven years. Gonzalez sent out Handsome Jack Flash to win this year's Zia Futurity. A homebred gelding by First Moonflash racing for Norma Alvarez, Brenda Alvarez, and Debra Laney, Handsome Jack Flash earned the winner's share of the stakes-record $409,434 purse and won his third race in as many outs.

Gonzalez said that Handsome Jack Flash would be pointed to the August 15-16 All American Futurity (G1) trials at Ruidoso Downs.

This year's Zia Festival races drew a crowd of 6,337 fans. On-track handle reached $261,365, down nearly 5 percent from last year's Zia on-track handle of $274,475. However, including off-track wagering, the total handle on the 11-race program was $572,476, an increase of nearly 8 percent over last year's handle of $531,272.

A recap of the Zia Festival races appears below; also rans are listed in order of finish. Complete coverage will be featured in the October issue of the New Mexico Horse Breeders magazine.
