RSS Feeds Friday, July 13, 2012

Richard K. McGehee's Junior June Bug is the fastest qualifier to the July 29 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

Sent to post as the 3-10 favorite in the seventh of nine trials on Friday, Junior June Bug defeated Slew By You by 2 ¾ lengths in :19.722 for 400 yards. Carlos Madeira rode the sorrel colt by Jesse James Jr for trainer Jackie Riddle.

Junior June Bug's victory was his third in five starts. On June 16, the colt scored a neck victory as the sixth-fastest qualifier in the 350-yard, $306,456 Mountain Top Futurity (R) at Ruidoso. The winner's share from Junior June Bug's trial win pushed his earnings to $186,676.

Second-fastest qualifier The Four Js won the eighth heat by 1 ¾ lengths under reigning AQHA champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr., who was riding the sorrel Get Down Perry gelding for the first time in a race. Fred Danley trains The Four Js for owners David E. Barrett and J & SM Inc.

The Four Js has banked $7,090 from five races. The gelding ran fourth, 2 ½ lengths behind winner Rex Hill, in the 300-yard, $50,000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park on April 7.

This year's Zia Futurity will be worth a stakes-record purse of $395,028. The complete list of qualifiers appears below:
