Karolina, a homebred filly by Desirio racing for Elmer L. Criswell and Fredda Draper, broke her maiden in Saturday's $110,000 Sunburst Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
Aided by a tail wind reported at 40 miles per hour, Karolina went 350 yards in :16.680, earning a 104 speed index and defeating 11-10 favorite Call Me A Blazn Chic by a head. Tanner Thedford rode Karolina for trainer Carl Draper.
Karolina's sire, Desirio, is a 10-year-old stallion by Strawfly Special. From 2004-06, Desirio earned $256,786, and his four wins in 12 starts included the '04 All American Juvenile Invitational Stakes (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs, and the 2006 Zia Park Championship at Zia Park.
Desirio's dam, the Sixarun mare Lady Tenaya, won the 2002 AQHA Distaff Challenge Championship (G1) at Lone Star Park. The stallion's top runners include PJ Chick In Black, the winner of the $251,359 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland on April 8, and Deniro, the runner-up to Kobe in the February 18, $200,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) in California.
Desirio is owned by Jim and Marilyn Helzer and Les and Leah Horner, and he stands for a $1,500 fee at JEH Stallion Station in Pilot Point, Texas.
Karolina's dam, Snazzy Ride, is a winning 9-year-old daughter of the Raise A Secret stallion Bridlewood. The filly traces back to her fourth dam, Black Sable, the AQHA champion 3-year-old filly in 1979.
Sent to post at odds of 6-1, Karolina returned a $15.40 win mutuel and teamed with runner-up Call Me A Blazn Chic for a $2 exacta payoff of $38.20. Wish You Had One To, a 21-1 longshot, ran third, three-quarters of a length behind the winner, to round out a $131.20 ($1) trifecta.
Karolina has made seven starts and has banked $101,381, of which $72,049 has been earned this season. The filly placed fourth in last year's 400-yard, $384,031 Zia Futurity (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
Fysta, Gotloveifyouwantit, Sparklin Royal, Cat Ta Hoola, and My Soul Mate completed the order of finish.
Call Me A Blazn Chic earned $23,650 to push her bankroll to $403,535 for her owner, Javier Marquez's J & M Racing and Farm in Monahans, Texas. The Chicks A Blazin filly has won three of her 10 outs, including last year's Zia Futurity and 400-yard, $330,643 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park. The Sunburst marked Call Me A Blazn Chic's first race since January 7, when she ran fourth in the 400-yard, $286,364 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland.
A bay daughter of the Corona Cartel stallion Stel Corona, Wish You Had One To has won two of 11 races and has banked $43,484 for owner Royal Dream Ranch LLC. The filly was coming off of a nose victory in a 350-yard non-winners-of-two $10,000 claiming sprint at Sunland on February 25, and she was a finalist in last year's $176,040 New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG2) at SunRay Park.
