Klassic Strawfly is Morning Line Favorite in First Moonflash Stakes

Yaneth Cabrera’s Klassic Strawfly will attempt to keep his successful season on track in Sunday’s 440-yard, $75,000-added First Moonflash Maturity (R) for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque Downs.

Klassic Strawfly is a 10-year-old son of Genuine Strawfly trained by Ron Stephens. The gelding has earned $52,780 from five outs this season, and his four wins include a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the May 27, 400-yard Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) at SunRay Park in Farmington.

The 3-1 morning-line favorite, Klassic Strawfly drew post 4 and will be ridden by Isaias Cardenas.

BL Corona, a graded stakes winning 5-year-old Southern Corona mare trained by Rene Saucedo for owner Bertha S. Irigoyen, drew post 8 and will be ridden by Edgar Martinez. BL Corona ended her 4-year-old season with an upset victory at odds of 40-1 in the 400-yard New Mexico Filly & Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on November 25, and her season record includes a third-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Too Flash For You, in the 350-yard, $85,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park in March.

Other contenders include Pierre and Leslie Amestoy’ Major Moonflash, a
4-year-old son of champion First Moonflash trained by Wes Giles. Major Moonflash is seeing his first win of the season off of a sophomore campaign during which the gelding earned $199,481 from 12 starts and scored a one-length victory in the 440-yard New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) at Zia Park.

Major Moonflash drew post 2 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos.
