Nine stakes races, including two restricted to New Mexico-breds, were contested on Zia Park’s Wednesday’s “Land of Enchantment Day” program.

Sandy’s Surprise, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Drosselmeyer, won the afternoon’s richest race, the 1 1/16-mile, $300,000 Zia Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies. Ridden by Mario Gutierrez for owners STD Racing Stable, John Fuller, and Neil Haymes, and trainer Doug O’Neill, Sandy’s Surprise defeated Ever So Clever by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:44.66 for her third win in 11 starts and first stakes victory.

Indian Jack, a son of Indian Firewater trained by Joel Marr for owner Donnell Echols of Lamesa, Texas, won the featured New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred race, the $140,000 Eddy County Stakes (R) for 2-year-olds. Ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr., the homebred gelding covered his 1-mile and 70-yard trip in 1:46.37 while defeating Jet N G by a half of a length.

Running Dragon won the richest New Mexico-bred Quarter Horse race on the card, the 400-yard, $140,000 New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship (RG1) for distaffers. Trained by Juan Gonzalez for owner By By JJ LLC of El Paso, Texas, the homebred 3-year-old Zulu Dragon filly defeated Princess Jessie Jane by a neck in :19.755. Adrian Ramos rode Running Dragon.

Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
