Liberty Lover Debuts With Win in Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity Trials
RSS Feeds Friday, June 6, 2014

Liberty Lover made his career debut with a 3 1/2-length victory in the second of three Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity (R) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Friday.

A homebred colt by Diabolical racing for J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, Liberty Lover went 5 furlongs in :57.85, the fastest winning time from the three heats. Enrique Gomez rode Liberty Lover for trainer Henry Dominguez.

Liberty Lover is one of three winners from as many starters produced by Wildcat Diva, an 11-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Forest Wildcat. Wildcat Diva is a half sister to Capdiva, a Capote filly who won the $259,000 Canadian Oaks (R) at Woodbine in 1997.

Trainer Todd Fincher will be represented by at least five 2-year-olds in the June 21, $155,974 Mountain Top Futurity final. One of his finalists, Raider Red, ran third as the 11-10 favorite in the third trial. A homebred gelding by Diabolical owned by Brad King and Dale Taylor, Raider Red was coming off of a 3 1/2-length win in the $77,052 colts and geldings division of the 4 1/2-furlong Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park on April 12.

Fincher actually trained the top three finishers in the third heat, including winner Diabolical Dame. Acquired for $25,000 by owners Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, and Derrol Hubbard at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the gray or roan daughter of Diabolical won by a half of a length from Lux.

The complete list of the confirmed qualifiers appears below in alphabetical order. A shake between the three fourth-place trial finishers -- Glide Path, Mesa Cat, and Muy Rapido -- will be held in the Ruidoso Downs racing office to determine the 10th and final qualifier.
