Lineage Day Races Draw 87 Entries

A total of 87 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses have been entered in the 11 races on Sunday's Lineage Day program at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Post time for the first race,, the Lineage Day Quarter Horse Claiming Stakes, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (MDT).

One of the Lineage Day entries, Stable HMA's Our Choice, drew post 6 and is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes. A 7-year-old gelding by the Fappiano stallion Desert God trained by Justin Evans, Our Choice has won six of his seven races this year, and his three stakes victories this season include the 5 1/2-furlong, $34,200 Sierra Blanca Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs on July 29.

The following is a preview of the 11 Lineage Day races, in the order they will be run:

RACE 1
LINEAGE DAY QUARTER HORSE CLAIMING STAKES (R)
3-year-olds & older
Purse, $10,000 – 350 yards


Sunny Situation, a 5-year-old Jacksboro gelding owned and trained by Martin N. Perez, is the morning-line favorite in this race for $5,000 claimers. Sunny Situation is coming off of a two-length victory as the 2-1 choice in a 400-yard non-winners-of-two $6,250 claimer for state-breds at Albuquerque on August 10.

RACE 2
JOHN AUGUSTINE STAKES (R)
3-year-olds & older
Purse, $50,000 – 870 yards

KC Royal Flush, last year's John Augustine Stakes winner, will attempt to defend his title from post 8 on Sunday. A 5-year-old gelding by Sixes Royal racing for Kathryn Maynard and Carla Feerer from the barn of Dominic Duree, KC Royal Flush is coming off of an 870-yard allowance victory against state-breds at Albuquerque on August 11.

Another contender, Rita J. Danley's The Real Rabbit, scored a 1 3/4-length win as the 5-2 favorite in a 550-yard non-winners-of-three allowance sprint at Ruidoso Downs on August 10.

All entries will carry 121 pounds. RACE 3
LINEAGE THOROUGHBRED CLAIMING STAKES (R)
3-year-olds & older
Purse, $10,000 – 5 ½ furlongs


Fred's Hennessy, a three-time winner this season, is the 5-2 morning-line choice in this race for $5,000 claimers.

A 4-year-old gelding by Roll Hennessy Roll owned by Stable HMA and trained by Justin Evans, Fred's Hennessy ran fourth, four lengths behind winner Mi Domscat, in last year's $50,000 Don Juan de Onate Stakes (R) on the Lineage Day program. Since then, he has won or finished second in seven of his 10 outs against New Mexico-bred claiming company.

RACE 4
HARD TWIST STAKES (RG3)
3-year-olds
Purse, $50,000 – 400 yards

Rare N Hot, a sorrel gelding by the First Down Dash stallion Corona Caliente, puts his three-race win streak on the line in this race.

A $6,250 claim by Santa Fe Horse Racing by Carrillo's LLC and trainer Arnoldo Carrillo on May 29, Rare N Hot has since won both of his starts for his new connections. The gelding has won four of five races and has earned $36,082 this season.

Other contenders include Holy Bucket LLC's Jess Dungarees, the winner of last year's New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity (RG3), and Yaneth Cabrera's Untangled Vines, the runner-up to Fury Of The Storm in the May 20, $75,000 New Mexico Breeders' Stakes (RG2) at SunRay Park.

All Hard Twist Stakes entries have been assigned to carry 122 pounds. CASEY DARNELL PONY EXPRESS STAKES (R)
3-year-olds & older
Purse, $50,000 – 5 ½ furlongs


Morning-line favorite Our Choice faces five opponents in this 5 1/2-furlong sprint, including Sierra Blanca Handicap runner-up Lesters Secret, a 6-year-old Lesters Boy gelding racing for Solitaire Stable and Simply The Best Thoroughbreds, and Aqiba Yulla, a homebred 5-year-old Devon Lane gelding campaigned by Franklyn Macaron who ran third in the Sierra Blanca.

PELICAN STAKES (RG3)

Call Me A Blazn Chic, a brown daughter of the late Chicks A Blazin owned by Javier Marquez's J & M Racing and Farm at Monahans, Texas, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in the Pelican Stakes.

Call Me A Blazn Chic has earned $411,035 from 11 races, and her three wins include last year's 400-yard, $331,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park, and 400-yard, $384,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs. The filly is coming off of a third-place finish in the June 23, $75,000 Tommy “Duke” Smith Handicap (RG2) at SunRay Park.

Gary C. Kloppenburg's Sparklin Royal, the winner of last year's 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3), drew post 10. The homebred daughter of Sixes Royal has banked $106,802 from 16 races.

All fillies have been assigned to tote 122 pounds. CHIEF NARBONA STAKES (R)
3-year-old fillies

Rita Danley's Roll Bloomers Roll, a homebred filly by Roll Hennessy Roll, drew the rail post for the Chief Narbona.

The 2-1 morning-line favorite, Roll Bloomers Roll ships in from Ruidoso Downs, where the filly won two races,including the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Sierra Starlet Handicap (R) on July 29. All told, she has earned $164,260 from 10 outs, and her four victories include last year's Dessie & Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) during the New Mexico State Fair portion of The Downs at Albuquerque meet, and the fillies division of the Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park.

Another contender, Dashkova, has won two stakes this season. The filly by the Forest Wildcat stallion Attila's Storm races for Double Kee LLC.

Lester Wright's Zenon's Star, a gray or roan gelding by the Sunday Silence stallion Fusaichi Zenon (JPN), is coming off of a half-length win in the 6 1/2-furlong, $75,000 Dine' Stakes (R) at SunRay Park on May 26.

Klassic Strawfly, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, is coming off of a third-place finish in the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Quarter Horse Handicap (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on July 29.

A homebred 6-year-old Genuine Strawfly gelding owned and trained by Ronald L. Stephens, Klassic Strawfly scored a half-length victory in the 400-yard, $75,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (R) at SunRay Park on June 10. Klasic Strawfly has earned $99,465 from six outs this season, and he won two New Mexico-bred allowance races during the 2011-12 Sunland Park meet.

Smash Dancer is the 122-pound highweight for the Lineage Stakes, the longest race on the Lineage Day program.

A homebred 5-year-old gelding by Robyn Dancer racing for Barbara M. Coleman of Farmington, New Mexico, and trained by Todd Fincher, Smash Dancer scored a half-length victory in the 7 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs on July 29. All told, Smash Dancer has won eight of 25 starts and has banked $336,588.

Cali Baby, a 6-year-old daughter of the El Prado (IRE) stallion Thatsusintheolbean racing for Larry and Denise Nichols' UKUSA Stables and trained by Eric Mikkleson, drew the rail post for the Carlos Salazar, named in honor of the late longtime sports editor of the Albuquerque Tribune.

The 2-1 morning-line favorite, Cali Baby is coming off of a seven-length win in the 6-furlong, $50,000 Lincoln Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs on July 29. The mare has earned $478,609 from 27 starts, and her 10 wins include five stakes victories.

Another contender, Rita Danley's I Am Lesters Gal, scored a two-length win in the 6 1/2-furlong, $85,000 Russell & Helen Foutz Distaff Handicap (R) at SunRay Park in April.
