Longshot Golden Springs Wins Island Fashion Stakes
RSS Feeds Sunday, February 27, 2011

Golden Springs outran her 42-1 odds to win Sunday's one-mile, $50,000 Island Fashion Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.

Saddled by Joyce Salisbury and ridden by Kelsi Purcell for owner Donna Eaton of Lamar, Colorado, Golden Springs made her eight-furlong trip in 1:41.51 and returned an $86.40 win mutuel as the longest shot in the field of nine. The winner's share of the purse pushed her earnings to $43,842.

Golden Springs was bred in Florida by Big C Farm and Dr. Tom Brokken, and she was a $45,000 purchase at the 2009 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Open Yearling Sale. The filly became the fourth stakes winner from 49 starters sired by Pomeroy, a 10-year-old son of the Danzig stallion Boundary whose four graded stakes victories from 2004-06 included the 2004 King's Bishop Stakes (G1) and '06 Forego Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Racecourse.

Pomeroy has sired the earners of more than $1.17 million from two crops, including Pomeroys Pistol, the winner of the January 30, $200,000 Forward Gal Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park. He stands for a $5,000 fee at Vinery at Summerfield, Florida.

Golden Springs' dam, the winning 14-year-old Wild Again mare Misty Springs, has produced three winners from four starters. Misty Springs' half sister, the Boundary filly Eye Dazzler, ran second in the 2003 Tempted Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct and '04 Davona Dale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream.

Golden Springs' third dam, the winning Secretariat mare Crystal Cream, foaled nine winners from 13 starters, including Perfectly Clear, a daughter of Woodman who won the 2000 Glendale Handicap on the turf at Turf Paradise in Arizona, and Vermillion, a Storm Bird colt who ran third in the '96 Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G2) at Hollywood Park.

Golden Springs traces back to her fourth dam, Clear Copy, a Kentucky-bred mare by the Hasty Road stallion Copy Chief who won the Grade 3 Prioress and Comely stakes at Aqueduct in 1974.

Campaigned in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, Golden Springs has won two of 10 races. The filly broke her maiden for a $25,000 tag at Lone Star Park last June.

Formal Plan finished second, a nose behind Golden Springs, and was followed by Icelain Diva, Paloma Mesa, Mythical Bride, Angel At Home, Highspeed Rescue, Texas Tempest, and Offlee Wicked completed the order of finish.

A Formal Gold filly racing for Bradley Brooks and trainer Jennifer Tooley, Formal Plan was coming off of a second-place finish in the January 29, $82,700 Portland Meadows Oaks in Oregon. Formal Plan has earned $30,480 from one win in three outs.

Icelain Diva earned $5,000 to push her bankroll to $21,575 for owner Joyce Salisbury, who also trains the chestnut daughter of El Corredor. The filly was just seven weeks removed from a 3 1/4-length victory in a 6-furlong maiden special weight sprint at Sunland.
