Longshot Jess Dungarees Breaks Stakes Record in Senor Futurity
RSS Feeds Saturday, September 24, 2011
Breaking sharply from post 5, Jess Dungarees outran his 21-1 odds to win Saturday's $91,275 New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity (RG3) for state-bred colts and geldings at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Jess Dungarees went 400 yards in :19.437, earning a 101 speed index and breaking by 8/100ths of a second the stakes record set by Aces Lucky Duck in 2002. Tanner Thedford rode the homebred colt by Jesse James Jr for Ron and Kay Jenkins' Holy Bucket LLC and trainer Michael Barber.

Jess Dungarees' sire, Jesse James Jr, is a 10-year-old stallion by 1994 AQHA champion 2-year-old Mr Jess Perry who won the 2005 First Down Dash Handicap at Los Alamitos. Racing in California and New Mexico from 2003-06, Jesse James Jr earned $167,275 from 21 outs, and his stakes record included a second-place finish in the '04 Golden State Derby (G1) and a third-place run in world champion Be A Bono's Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).

Jesse James Jr's top runners include Osbaldo, a New Mexico-bred colt who won his first six starts this season, including graded state-bred futurities at Sunland Park and SunRay Park. A full brother to Grade 1 winner Jesstified, the stallion stands for a $1,500 fee at Mac and Janis Spencer Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.

Jess Dungarees is also one of two winners from three starters foaled by Gingham Dungarees, a winning and stakes-placed 10-year-old daughter of AQHA champion Now I Know. The colt's half sister, the Woodbridge filly Woody Dungarees, put together a five-race win streak last season that included the 400-yard, $75,000 SunRay Park Firecracker Stakes (R), and the 400-yard, $40,000 Pelican Stakes (RG3) and 400-yard, $55,188 New Mexico State Fair Breeders' Derby (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Jess Dungarees' second dam, Gingham N Diamonds, is a winning daughter of The Adamas who ran second in Major Rime's 1994 Clovis Classic Futurity.

A winner of three consecutive races, Jess Dungarees won the first of four Senor Futurity trials on September 9 and was the sixth-fastest qualifier to the final. All told, the colt has won three of six starts, and the winner's share of the $91,275 purse pushed his bankroll to $56,014.

Black Racket ran second, a neck behind Jess Dungarees, and was followed by Latest Policy, fastest qualifier and 3-5 favorite Osbaldo, No Breaks Included, Mark West, PK Bay, Emerson Biggins, CWS War Lord, and Major Trippten.

A brown gelding by the Corona Cartel stallion Furyofthewind, Black Racket has earned $32,404 from eight starts for his owners, Cervando Molinar and breeder Hubaldo Solis. Black Racket was a finalist in the June 5, $176,040 New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG2) at SunRay Park.

Latest Policy is a bay gelding by Latest Version campaigned by Juliana Madrid. The runner-up to Osbaldo in the New Mexico Breeders' Futurity, Latest Policy has won one of five starts and has banked $53,060.
