Oscar Ceballos rode longshot Tyee to a half-length victory in Sunday’s $30,000 Charles Taylor Derby for 3-year-olds at The Downs at Albuquerque.
Owned and trained by Patrick Foss, Tyee covered one mile in 1:39.03 while posting his third win in eight starts. Tyee was sent to post at odds of 16-1 and returned a $34.20 win mutuel.
Tyee was bred in Kentucky by Dr. and Mrs. Kerry and Linda Osment, and the bay gelding is one of 219 winners from 361 starters sired by the Unbridled Song stallion Buddha, an 11-year-old stallion who won the 2002 Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) at Aqueduct. A Kentucky-bred who currently stands in Argentina, Buddha has sired the earners of more than $7.7 million from five crops, including three-time Louisiana-bred stakes winner Hisse.
Tyee’s dam, Time To Bluff, is a winning 14-year-old daughter of the Danzig stallion Pine Bluff who ran third in the $100,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes at Fair Grounds Racecourse in 1999. Time To Bluff has produced three winners from four starters.
Tyee traces back to his third dam, the Buckpasser mare Swingtime. A 1972 foal, Swingtime was a Group 3 stakes winner in England and won six stakes in California from 1976-78, including the 1977 Beverly Hills Handicap (G2) on the turf at Hollywood Park and the ’78 Santa Maria Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita. Swingtime foaled five winners from six starters, including 1990 New Orleans Handicap (G3) winner Festive.
Swingtime was a half sister to the late Bag Of Tunes, a filly by Herbager who won the 1973 Kentucky Oaks (G2) at Churchill Downs.
All told, Tyee has won three of eight races, and the $18,000 winner’s share of the Charles Taylor Derby purse increased his earnings to $39,505. The gelding was claimed by Foss at Oaklawn Park for $15,000 back in February. He has won two of his four outs and has banked $30,460 since the claim.
One’s Own Accord ran second and was followed by Miller’s Time, Develish Jack, 6-5 favorite Haitian Hero, and McKenna’s Justice.
A dark bay or brown gelding by Petionville, One’s Own Accord earned $6,000 for his owners, Rob and Angela Kernell and Curtis and Ming Meyer. Earlier this year, One’s Own Accord ran fifth in both the Colorado Derby at Arapahoe Park and SunRay Park and Casino Handicap.
Miller’s Time is a maiden gelding by Point Given racing for Craig Spencer and Mike Wuffert. A $10,000 claim at Sunland Park back in March, Miller’s Time has earned $9,630 from five outs, all of which have been at New Mexico tracks.
