RSS Feeds Friday, July 09, 2010

Love Samba, a sorrel Corona Cartel filly racing for Jim D. Pitts, won the second of five Rainbow Derby (G1) trials on Friday and recorded the fastest qualifying time for the July 24 final.

Trained by Blane Wood and ridden by Ricky Ramirez, Love Samba went 440 yards in :20.996 while defeating second-fastest qualifier Smokey Stone by a neck. All told, Love Samba has won three of seven races and has earned $138,725, and she was a finalist in last year’s All American (G1) and Rainbow (G1) futurities.

Other prominent Rainbow Derby finalists include 2009 AQHA champion 2-year-old gelding First Klas Fred and Heritage Place Derby (G1) winner Streakin Down.

This year’s Rainbow Derby will be worth $873,441, the highest purse in the stakes’ 46-year history. The previous record purse of $567,167 was established in 1982.
