Magnifico Dragon Tops New Mexico Cup Futurity Qualifiers

Daniel Balderrama’s Magnifico Dragon is the fastest qualifier to the October 30, $300,000-est. New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) for state-bred juveniles at Zia Park.

Sent to post as the 6-5 favorite in the sixth of eight 400-yard trials on Saturday, Magnifico Dragon defeated fifth-fastest qualifier Es Runnin by 1 1/2 lengths in :20.011. Mauro Salcedo rode the sorrel son of Zulu Dragon for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez.

Magnifico Dragon was bred by Heriberto Moreno. The gelding has won two of five starts and has banked $64,934, and he was coming off of a second-place finish in the September 24, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Second-fastest qualifier Running Dragon, a multiple graded stakes winning Zulu Dragon filly trained by Samuel Robledo for owner By By JJ LLC, won the seven heat by a half of a length from fourth-fastest qualifier Mitey Man in :20.140. Adrian Ramos rode the homebred gray filly.

Running Dragon has earned $318,196 from seven outs, and his six wins include the April 24, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park, and the June 18, 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs.
