Major Bites Returns in First Moonflash Maturity

Major Bites, a 4-year-old Jesse James Jr gelding owned by Israel Bordier, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite for Sunday’s 440-yard, $102,558 First Moonflash Maturity (R) for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque Downs.

Trained by Cynthia Gonzalez, Major Bites will be stretching out in distance off of a third-place finish, a half of a length behind winner First Kool Moon, in the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Handicap (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on July 30. The gelding has banked $41,330 from four outs this year, and his season resume includes a second-place finish in the 400-yard, $40,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) at SunRay Park in May.

Major Bites drew post 4 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez. His eight opponents include Robert D. Smith’s Play Misty Foreme, a 4-year-old son of Jesse James Jr trained by Shae Cox. Play Misty Foreme has made two career starts at Albuquerque, and he prepped for this start with a half-length win as theh 7-5 favorite in a 440-yard, $30,000 open-condition allowance for state-breds at Albuquerque on July 22.

Play Misty Foreme drew post 9 and will be ridden by Jose Luis Enriquez.

Other contenders include Dungarees Version, a 5-year-old Winners Version gelding trained by Larry Chavez for owners David Hinkins and Ross Hinkins. Dungarees Version ran third, 1 1/4 lengths behind winner Klassic Strawfly, in last year’s First Moonflash Maturity.

Agustin Silva will ride Dungarees Version from the rail post.
