RSS Feeds Tuesday, March 05, 2013

A full field of 10 New Mexico-breds has been entered in Saturday's $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.

Midnightlowdown, the 3-1 morning-line favorite, brings a three-race win streak into the 4 1/2-furlong stakes. A 4-year-old gelding by the Storm Boot stallion Stormin' Lyon racing for William Rezzonico and Jeremy Trujillo and trained by Gerald Marr, Midnightlowdown is coming off of a 1 3/4-length victory in a 6-furlong, $37,500 allowance optional claiming ($50,000) race for state-breds at Sunland on January 31.

Midnightlowdown's streak includes a two-length win at odds of 80-1 in the 6-furlong, $140,600 New Mexico Cup Colts & Geldings Championship (R) at Zia Park on October 28.

Midnightlowdown will break from post 8 under jockey Duane “Lefty” Sterling on Saturday. The gelding's nine opponents include last year's Mt. Cristo Rey winner, Our Choice. An 8-year-old Desert God gelding campaigned by Stable HMA and trained by Justin Evans, Our Choice won four stakes last year, after he was claimed by his current connections for $25,000 in December 2011.

Another contender, Kiss My Hennessy, will be making his first start against older horses in the Mt. Cristo Rey. A multiple stakes winning 3-year-old gelding by Roll Hennessy Roll, Kiss My Hennessy is trained by Todd Fincher for owners Scott Bryant and Joe Dee Brooks.

The Mt. Cristo Rey will be the 10th race on Sunland Park's 11-race program, which gets underway at 1 p.m. (MST). Estimated post time for the Mt. Cristo Rey is 4:40 p.m.
