Pierre and Leslie Amestoy’s Mighty Moonflash won the first of four Zia Derby (RG2) trials at Ruidoso Downs, posting the fastest qualifying time for the $139,483 final on July 26.

Prepped by Ross Amestoy and ridden by Tanner Thedford, Mighty Moonflash covered 400 yards in :19.465, and his winning margin was 1 1/4 lengths from sixth-fastest qualifier Threedeewoodee. The homebred First Moonflash gelding’s victory was his second in nine starts.

Mighty Moonflash was coming off of a 2 1/4-length win as the 13-10 favorite in a 400-yard maiden special weight race for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds on June 22. The gelding’s sire, First Moonflash, was last year’s leading freshman sire.

Kia Won, the second-fastest qualifier, won the third heat by a neck from fourth-fastest qualifier DM One Hot Charmer. Under jockey Sergio Becerra Jr., the gelded son of champion Ketel Won went 400 yards in :19.582 while scoring his fourth win in 10 outs. Gene L. Burden saddled Kia Won for owners Nahum Prieto and Joe Rios, who acquired the gelding for $5,000 at the 2012 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs.
