Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity Trials Set for Thursday
RSS Feeds Monday, June 07, 2010

A total of 21 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds are entered in Thursday’s Mountain Top Futurity (R) trials at Ruidoso Downs.

Dodson, a gelding by Roll Hennessy Roll racing for Tyler Holstein and Renee Carter and trained by Todd Fincher, is the morning-line even-money favorite in the last of three 5-furlong trials. A $9,500 purchase from breeders Gerald King and Brad King at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, Dodson most recently ran a close second in the colts and geldings division of the April 17 Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park.

Texas Silver, a colt by Silver Season and the morning-line choice in the second heat, is coming off of a two-length victory in a 4 ½-furlong allowance sprint at Sunland on April 18. Acquired by J. Kirk Robison for $25,000 from breeders Richard Brunacini and Kay Thurman at the '09 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, Texas Silver is trained by Henry Dominguez.

The first Mountain Top trial is headed by morning-line favorite Red Rock Springs, a dark bay Your Eminence colt owned and trained by Tony Sedillo. Red Rock Springs broke his maiden with a three-length win in a March 30 Copper Top Futurity trial.

The Mountain Top Futurity final will be run on Saturday, June 26.  The Mountain Top is the first of three New Mexico-bred stakes for 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs; the others, the 5 ½-furlong Rio Grande Senor (R) and Rio Grande Senorita (R) futurities, will be contested on Zia Festival Day, August 1.
