My Big Chief is Fastest Qualifier to NM State Fair Breeders' Derby

My Big Chief, a gelding by Get Down Perry owned and trained by Gerardo Cano, won the second of two New Mexico State Fair Breeders' Derby (RG3) trials at The Downs at Albuquerque on Sunday.

Ridden by Adrian Ramos, My Big Chief covered 400 yards in :19.557 and set the fastest qualiyfing time for the $50,000-added Breeders' Derby final on September 23. His margin of victory was a nose from second-fastest qualifier PK Bay.

My Big Chief has won four of 11 races and has earned $56,488. The gelding ran third, one length behind winner Fury Of The Storm, in the February 19, $110,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park, and he was the second-fastest qualifier to this year's $286,364 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland.

PK Bay has banked $184,087 from 13 outs for his owners, David Barrett and Sue May. The stakes-winning son of Brookstone Bay was making his first start since January 7, when he ran third in the Shue Fly.

Third-fastest qualifier Two Bit Corona won the first heat in :19.738 for owners Mike Abraham and James R. McClintic. A homebred daughter of Corona Caliente, the filly was posting her third win in seven starts.

Astica, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, will face older distaffers for the first time in Wednesday’s 400-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. The New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship is one of two state-bred stakes and eight stakes scheduled for Wednesday’s third annual “Land of Enchantment” Day program at Zia Park. Post time for the first of 11 races is set for 12:15 p.m. (MST).
