My Homey ran his win streak to three following a wire-to-wire, 2 1/4-length victory in Saturday's Totah Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at SunRay Park.
Racing for Steve Prather, Bessie Prather, and trainer Hermenegildo “Papi” Aldavaz, My Homey covered 4 ½ furlongs in :51.17 after setting fractions of :21.44 and :44.60 under jockey J. Martin Bourdieu. The gelding's performance came just six days after he won the 5-furlong, $136,426 Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
My Homey was bred by Steve Prather, a resident of Eunice, New Mexico, and owner of Doubletree Farm in Hobbs. The gelding is the first stakes winner sired by freshman sire The Way Home, an unraced 7-year-old son of European Group 1 winner and 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic Stakes (G1) runner-up Giant's Causeway.
A half brother to several stakes winners, including Grade 2 winner Cat's At Home and two-time Phoenix Gold Cup (G3) winner Honor The Hero, The Way Home's has sired four starters and the earners of more than $170,800. He stands for a $2,500 fee at Doubletree Farm.
My Homey's dam, Spectacular Place, is a winning daughter of the Grade 3-winning Cox's Ridge stallion Out Of Place.
Sent to post as the 13-10 second choice, My Homey returned a $4.60 win mutuel. The gelding has won four of six races, and the winner's share of the $85,000 Totah Stakes purse increased his bankroll to $141,491.
“Some people would question us bringing him back in just six days (after the Mountain Top Futurity), but the horse was telling us he was ready,” said Steve Prather. “When we took him back to his stall from the test barn after that race, we put him on the walker, and he just bucked and kicked and looked like he was having a great time.
“He ate up all of his feed in just 30 minutes,” he added. “He was ready to roll, and he's sound. His legs are like four-inch steel pipes.”
Prather said that My Homey will be given a break from racing until the New Mexico Cup Juvenile Colts & Geldings Stakes (R) at Zia Park in October.
Speedy Caracal, Lucky Lester, 6-5 favorite I Play Dirty, Xs Sailor, Roll Devil Roll, Run Cope Run, Gabe, and Abo Case completed the order of finish.
A homebred colt by the unraced Red Ransom stallion Caracal, Speedy Caracal has earned $18,600 from two outs for his owner, Michael Weatherly. The colt was coming off of a third-place finish in his career debut, a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race for state-breds at SunRay Park on June 25.
Lucky Lester is a dark bay gelding by the winning Indian Charlie stallion My Charlie Brown. Bred and owned by Lucky Six Inc., Lucky Lester has banked $21,970 from three races, and he was just five weeks removed from an 8 1/2-length victory as the 1-5 favorite in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight sprint at SunRay on May 28.
