My Mirage, Fast Gator Win New Mexico-Bred Stakes on Sunday
RSS Feeds Sunday, September 3, 2017

Bauer Farm LLC’s My Mirage led from the start to finish and earned his first career stakes win in Sunday’s 6 1/2-furlong, $96,982 Casino at the Downs Derby (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds at Albuquerque Downs.

Ridden by J. Martin Bourdieu for trainer Dick “Flaco” Cappellucci, My Mirage set fractions of :22.73 and :44.82 before reaching the wire in 1:15.01, 1 3/4 lengths in front of runner-up and odds-on favorite Go For A Stroll. The $47,037 winner’s share of the purse increased the homebred Diabolical colt’s bankroll to $96,049, of which $65,557 has been earned this season.

In just his second career start, My Mirage finished second, 2 1/2 lengths behind winner Ignored, in the 4 1/2-furlong Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park. However, a mild injury cut short the colt’s 2-year-old season. He has made two starts at Albuquerque Downs this summer, finishing third in two non-winners-of-three allowance races.

Raced exclusively in New Mexico, My Mirage has won three of six starts.

Expect A Storm ran third, 4 3/4 lengths behind My Mirage. Happy Hennessy, Tinys Storm, and Forgotaboutme completed the order of finish.

Also on Sunday, Ry Eikleberry rode Fast Gator to a one-length win in the $134,770 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) for 2-year-old New Mexico-bred fillies at Ruidoso Downs.

Prepped by Henry Dominguez for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, Fast Gator went 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:05.85 while scoring her second win in as many starts and first stakes victory. The $67,385 winner's share of the purse pushed the homebred daughter of Diabolical's bankroll to $69,785.

Fast Gator made her debut with a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length win in the first of two Senorita Futurity trials on August 12. The filly is one of three winners from as many starters produced by Gator Prowl, a 10-year-old daughter of Roar Of The Tiger and winner of the 2010 Marshua Stakes at Laurel Park Racetrack in Maryland. Fast Gator is a half sister to Gator Heat, the winner of the 2015 Dine Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.

Orogrande finished second and was followed by 7-5 favorite Gone Shoppin, Comics Cashway, Passion To Win, Western Style, Ghost Of Creebear, Hennessy Express and Donna Who. Finalist Diabolical Mama was scratched.
