New Mexico-Bred PJ Chick In Black Makes Ruidoso Futurity Final
RSS Feeds Friday, May 25, 2012

PJ Chick In Black, a New Mexico-bred filly by Desirio racing for Fredda Draper and Denny Bowen, is one of 10 finalists in this year's Grade 1, $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Esgar Ramirez for trainer Carl Draper, PJ Chick In Black remained undefeated following her three-length victory in the ninth of 25 trials on Friday. The filly covered her 350-yard trip in :17.840 and earned an 80 speed index against a head wind estimated at 20 miles per hour.

PJ Chick In Black has banked $126,239 from three starts, and her three wins include the April 8, $251,359 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Sunland Park.

PJ Chick In Black was one of five registered New Mexico-breds entered in the Ruidoso Futurity trials, and she was the lone registered state-bred runner to make the final. The filly was also one of only four $15,000 supplemental nominations to make the final.

Fastest qualifier Krash Cartel made his career debut with a 4 1/4-length victory in the second trial. Ridden by Cody Jensen for owner Los Primitos and trainer John Stinebaugh, the Oklahoma-bred Corona Cartel colt went 350 yards in :17.759 while posting an 83 speed index.

The Ruidoso Futurity is the first leg of Ruidoso Downs' All American Triple Crown, which includes the Grade 1 Rainbow and All American futurities. The complete list of qualifiers to the $600,000 final on June 9 appears below:
