New Mexico Breds Make Red Cell Sunland Distance Challenge Final

A pair of registered New Mexico breds, KC Royal Flush and I Know Bedarina, will race in the 870-yard, $50,000-added Red Cell Sunland Park Distance Challenge (G3) at Sunland Park on March 31.

KC Royal Flush and I Know Bedarina finished third and fourth, respectively, in the first of two trials on Friday. A homebred 6-year-old Sixes Royal gelding racing for Kathryn Maynard and Carla Feerer of Los Lunas, New Mexico, KC Royal Flush has earned $315,776 from 40 starts, and he was won three stakes, including last year's $140,000 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship (R) at Zia Park.

I Know Bedarina is a homebred 6-year-old son of champion Now I Know owned by Rogers Farms of Clint, Texas. The gelding has won two of 24 outs and has banked $100,682.

Fastest qualifier Hauling The Cash won the first trial by three-quarters of a length. The 4-year-old Texas-bred gelding by Holland Ease races for Javier Marquez's J & M Racing and Farm of Monahans, Texas and is trained by Kristopher Cordova.

Astica, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, will face older distaffers for the first time in Wednesday’s 400-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. The New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship is one of two state-bred stakes and eight stakes scheduled for Wednesday’s third annual “Land of Enchantment” Day program at Zia Park. Post time for the first of 11 races is set for 12:15 p.m. (MST).
