New Mexico Cup Futurity Trials Draw 72 State-Bred Juveniles

A total of 72 state-bred 2-year-olds, including stakes winners Mitey Man and Running Dragon, has been entered in Saturday’s 400-yard New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) trials at Zia Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from Saturday’s eight trials will meet in the $300,000-est. New Mexico Cup Futurity final on October 30.

Mitey Man and Running Dragon both drew into the seventh heat. A gelded son of champion First Moonflash trained by Trey Wood for owner Bobby Simmons of Midland, Texas, Mitey Man is coming off of a three-quarter length victory in the September 24, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Futurity (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Mitey Man has won three of five starts and has earned $128,464. The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by Edwuin Lujan.

Running Dragon has banked $313,396 from six outs, and her five wins include a half-length victory in the April 24, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park, and a neck score in the 350-yard, $364,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs on June 18. The homebred daughter of freshman sire Zulu Dragon is trained by Samuel Robledo for the By By JJ Partnership.

Running Dragon drew post 3 and will be ridden by Adrian Ramos.

Other prominent New Mexico-bred juveniles entered in the trials include White Russsian, Magnifico Dragon, and Big Spurs. White Russsian is a son of Swissle Stick (TB) racing for Cuadra San Juditas LLC from the barn of trainer Javier Roman Jr. The gelding’s season resume includes a second-place finish, 1 3/4 lengths behind winner A Fancy La Jolla, in the June 19, 350-yard Four Corners Futurity at SunRay Park.

White Russsian drew post 8 and will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez in the first heat.

Big Spurs will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin from post 8 in the second trial. A gray colt by freshman sire Big Daddy Cartel trained by Ernest Fennell for owner Astorga Racing LLC, Big Spurs has earned $75,619 from five races, and his record includes a second-place finish to Running Dragon in the New Mexican Spring Futurity.

Magnifico Dragon is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the sixth heat. Trained by Cynthia Gonzalez for owner Daniel Balderrama, the Zulu Dragon gelding is coming off of a second-place finish to Mitey Man in the New Mexico State Fair Futurity.

Magnifico Dragon drew post 6 and will be ridden by Mauro Salcedo.
