Jockeys Ry Eikleberry and Roimes Chirinos each rode the winners of two races during Sunday’s $2-million New Mexico Cup Day program at Zia Park.

Eikleberry won a pair of Thoroughbred races -- the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Lassie Championship for 2-year-old fillies (with Fast Gator), and the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Derby Championship for 3-year-old colts and geldings (with My Mirage). Chirinos also won two Thoroughbred stakes -- the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship for fillies and mares (with Diabolical Dame), and the 6-furlong, $170,000 New Mexico Cup Sprint Championship for 3-year-olds and older (with Forger).

Three trainers -- Henry Dominguez, Joel Marr, and Todd Fincher -- won two Thoroughbred races apiece.

On the Quarter Horse side, A Passion For Flashn won the afternoon’s richest race, the 400-yard, $306,841 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds. Manuel Gutierrez rode the First Moonflash colt for owner RC Racing LLC and trainer Martin Orona Sr.

Zia Park management reported official attendance at 1,188. A total of $692,570 was wagered on the 12-race card, of which $98,616 was wagered on track and $593,954 was bet off track. This year’s New Mexico Cup total handle marked a 17-percent increase over the 2016 total handle of $592,007.

Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
