New Mexico QH Breeders' Championship Heads Closing-Day Card at Albuquerque

A total of eight state-bred Quarter Horses, including Eric Strawn's Injun Toole and Lorenzo Cano's Iseeyoustaring, have been entered in Sunday's $50,000 New Mexico Quarter Horse Breeders' Championship (RG3), the feature race on The Downs at Albuquerque's closing-day program.

Both Injun Toole and Iseeyoustaring will put two-race win streaks on the line in the 440-yard race. A 4-year-old gelding by the Easily Smashed stallion Invisible Injun trained by Melvin Cordova, Injun Toole is coming off of a half-length victory in a state-bred 400-yard allowance optional claiming ($40,000) sprint at Zia Park on October 5. All told, Injun Toole has earned $65,320 from 15 starts, 14 of which have been in New Mexico.

Iseeyoustaring will be making his first start since August 24, when he scored a nose win in a state-bred 440-yard, $15,000 allowance race at Albuquerque. The gray 4-year-old Sixes Royal gelding is trained by Gerardo Cano, and he has banked $70,513 from 17 races, all in New Mexico.

The New Mexico Quarter Horse Breeders' Championship is the eighth race on The Downs at Albuquerque's nine-race card. Scheduled post time is 3:41 p.m. (MST). The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey and weight assignments – South Oak (Brian Theriot, 122); Visible Injun (Adam Martinez, 123); Stel Gone Corona (Jose Alvarez, 123); Call A Fast Corona (Dusty Shepherd, 120); Corona Dream (Tony Guymon, 122); Seacrest Out (Elliot Bachicha Jr., 122); Injun Toole (Felipe Garcia-Luna, 122); and Iseeyoustaring (Adrian Ramos, 122).

Also on Sunday's card, eight $5,000 claiming Thoroughbreds have been entered in the 1-mile, $10,000 Billy Powell Claiming Handicap. BAM Racing LLC's Bench The Judge, a 5-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Benchmark trained by Justin Evans, is the 125-pound highweight. Scheduled post time for the Billy Powell Claiming Handicap is 3:18.

Carson City Girl, a homebred daughter of Woodbridge and the fastest qualifier, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Sunday’s 400-yard, $379,896 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs, one of 12 state-bred stakes to be run at Ruidoso this weekend. The races are part of the track’s annual Zia Festival, which celebrates all things New Mexico, including New Mexico-made products and arts and crafts.
