RSS Feeds Friday, February 10, 2012

First Corona Call, a homebred 5-year-old Southern Corona gelding racing for Richard R. Shearer of Portales, made the final of this year's West Texas Maturity (G2) at Sunland Park.

Trained by Trey Wood and ridden by Ricky Ramirez, First Corona Call ran fourth, a half of a length behind second-fastest qualifier Zulu Dragon, in the last of three trials on Friday. The gelding went 400 yards in :19.399 and posted the fifth-fastest qualifying time for the $99,825 final on March 3.

First Corona Call was the only one of the four registered New Mexico-breds entered in the trials to make the final. He has earned $444,888 from 19 starts, and his six career victories include a 350-yard, $36,000 state-bred allowance sprint at Sunland on December 23.

Fastest qualifier First Down Master won the second trial by one length in :19.313. The 4-year-old stallion by all-time leading sire First Down Dash races for the 21 Partnership from the barn of Joe Badilla Jr.
