NM-Bred PJ Chick In Black is Fastest West Texas Derby Qualifier
RSS Feeds Friday, March 08, 2013

PJ Chick In Black, a registered New Mexico-bred filly by Desirio and last year's AQHA champion 2-year-old filly, is the fastest qualifier to this year's 400-yard, $65,000-added West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.

Making her first start in six months on Friday, PJ Chick In Black won the third of seven trials by one length as the 7-10 favorite. Under jockey Esgar Ramirez, the filly covered 400 yards in :18.841 while earning a 99 speed index and her sixth victory in seven races. John Stinebaugh saddled PJ Chick In Black for owners Dennis C. Bowen, Susan Taylor, and Jack Smith Farms.

PJ Chick In Black has banked $528,439 while racing exclusively in New Mexico. The filly won two graded stakes last season, including the 350-yard, $600,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs, and she was the fastest qualifier to the Grade 1, $2.4-million All American Futurity.
