NMHBA Changes Rules Regarding Qualifying Foals
RSS Feeds Sunday, January 29, 2017
At its annual meeting in Albuquerque on Thursday, January 26, the membership of the New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association voted to change the qualifying status for a New Mexico-bred foal.

The change applies to both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses.

Beginning this year, to qualify for New Mexico-bred status, the mare must still be bred to a New Mexico stallion, but she can now leave the state during her pregnancy. However, she still must deliver the foal in New Mexico.

For Quarter Horse mares and embryo transfers to New Mexico stallions, the donor mare and/or recipient mare can leave the state. However, the recipient mare must return to foal.

In order for the subsequent foal to be eligible for registry as a New Mexico-bred, a $500 fee will be due for every mare who leaves the state.

Also during the annual meeting, Ralph Vincent of Albuquerque was re-elected as NMHBA president. Jay Taylor of Albuquerque will serve as first vice president and Norma Alvarez of La Union will serve as second vice president.
