RSS Feeds Sunday, February 5, 2017
Michael Weatherly’s Not My Note rallied to win Saturday’s $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Tracy Hebert for trainer Simon Buechler, Not My Note covered 4 1/2 furlongs in :49.52, and his winning margin was 4 1/2 lengths from Weappear. The homebred 5-year-old Fusaichi Zenon (JPN) gelding was sent to post as the 3-5 favorite in the full field of 10 and returned a $3.20 win mutuel.

Not My Note is one of four black-type stakes winners sired by Fusaichi Zenon, a stakes-winning son of 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and horse of the year Sunday Silence. Now 20, Fusaichi Zenon entered stud in 2004 and has sired the earners of more than $1.7 million from 58 starters, including stakes winner Zenon’s Star.

Fusaichi Zenon is owned by and stands for a $2,000 at Weatherly Horse Farms in Anthony, New Mexico

One of two winners from as many starters foaled by the unraced homebred 9-year-old Your Eminence mare Best Note Yet, Not My Note is a full brother to Sunday Rose, a daughter of Fusaichi Zenon who ran third in the 2015 New Mexico Cup Lassie Stakes (R) at Zia Park. The gelding’s second dam, the Notebook mare Miss Noteworthy, won five stakes in New Mexico and Arizona from 2004-05, including the ’04 Maxine M. Piggott Stakes (R) for Arizona-breds at Turf Paradise.

Not My Note traces back to his fourth dam, Buy A Bride, a daughter of Slew The Bride who ran second in the 1992 Very Subtle Stakes (R) at Santa Anita Park and was a half sister to stakes winner Public Tradition.

Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Not My Note has won eight of 14 starts, and the $51,000 winner’s share of the Mt. Cristo Rey purse bumped his bankroll to $262,411. The gelding was coming off of a 4-year-old campaign during which he earned $175,439 from nine outs and won the 5 1/2-furlong, $60,000 Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs, and the 6 1/2-furlong, $85,000 Johnie L. Jamison Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.

Wyatt finished third, 5 1/4 lengths behind Not My Note. D E Lover, Infinite Bull, Get Er Done, Long Stormy Trip, Hot News, El Tule, and Hehasspirit completed the order of finish.

Weappear is a 5-year-old gray or roan son of the Storm Cat stallion owned and trained by Nancy Summers. The gelding, who was making his first start since he ran second to Not My Note in the Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes at Albuquerque, has won four of 15 races, and the $18,700 runner-up share of the Mt. Cristo Rey purse pushed his earnings to $109,072.

An 8-year-old gelding by the El Prado (IRE) stallion Pro Prado, Wyatt races for A and A Equine Inc. and Gino Roncelli. Wyatt has won eight of 26 starts and has banked $246,045, and in 2015 he assembled a four-race win streak that included victories in the 1 1/16-mile, $60,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Handicap (R) at Albuquerque Downs, and the 6-furlong, $181,600 New Mexico Cup Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park.
