Not My Note Wins Casey Darnell Pony Express
RSS Feeds Wednesday, September 21, 2016
Glen Murphy rode Not My Note to a 1 1/2-length victory in the September 17, $60,000 Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque Downs.

Prepped by Dan Dennison for owner Michael G. Weatherly, Not My Note covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:03.42 while scoring his first career stakes win. The $36,000 winner’s share of the purse bumped the homebred 4-year-old gelding’s earnings to $132,711, of which $96,739 has been banked this season.

Not My Note became the fourth black-type stakes winner from 51 starters sired by Fusaichi Zenon (JPN). A graded stakes-winning 19-year-old son of 1989 Horse of the Year Sunday Silence, Fusaichi Zenon is a full brother to Agnes Gold (JPN) and Limitless Bid (JPN), both multiple stakes winners in Japan.

Fusaichi Zenon has sired the earners of more than $1.4 million from 10 crops. The stallion is owned by Weatherly, and he stood the 2016 season for a $2,000 fee at Weatherly Horse Farm at Anthony, New Mexico.

Not My Note is also one of two winners from as many starters produced by Best Note Yet, an unraced 8-year-old mare by the Saint Ballado stallion Your Eminence. The gelding’s full sister, Sunday Rose, ran third in last year’s 6-furlong, $140,600 New Mexico Cup Lassie Stakes (R) at Zia Park.

Not My Note’s second dam, the Arizona-bred Notebook mare Miss Noteworthy, won five stakes in Arizona and New Mexico from 2004-05, including the $40,000 Maxine M. Piggott Stakes (R) at Turf Paradise in ’04. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Buy A Bride, a stakes-placed daughter of the Seattle Slew stallion Slew The Bride and a half sister to stakes winner Public Tradition.

Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Not My Note has won five of 10 starts, and his season resume includes two allowance victories at Sunland Park in April. He also ran second, one length behind winner Citizen Geller, in the June 25, 7-furlong O.D. McDonald Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Weappear, the 19-10 favorite, finished second and was followed by Storm Of Roses, Citizen Geller, and Joker’s Touch.

Weappear is a 4-year-old son of the Storm Cat stallion Devon Lane campaigned by Ruth Summers of Albuquerque. Raced against both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses in New Mexico, the gelding has won five of 16 starts, including the 870-yard, $50,000 Zia 870 Championship Stakes (R) at Ruidoso Downs on July 31, and the $12,000 runner-up share of the Pony Express Stakes purse pushed his earnings to $128,248.

Storm Of Roses races for Alvaro Hinojos. A $3,700 yearling purchase at the 2014 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the 3-year-old Swissle Stick gelding has won one of 10 outs and has banked $24,265.

The Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes honors the memory of the late Clarence “Casey” Darnell, a longtime New Mexico horseman who died in 2001. Working from his Alamo Farm near Corrales, the versatile trainer prepped the winners of 500 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races, and he also trained performance horses in multiple events. Darnell was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in ’09.
