Ochoa won the 14th of 26 All American Futurity (G1) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Thursday, posting the fastest qualifying time for the stakes-record $2.4-million final on Labor Day.
Saddled by C. Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath and ridden by Jacky Martin, Ochoa defeated second-fastest qualifier Lotta Love For Robyn by a half of a length while covering 440 yards in :21.074. The sorrel gelding races for J Bar 7, M. & K. Cluck, and D. Benson.
“He's a very fast horse,” said Gilbreath, who has saddled All American Futurity winners On A High (1983) and Refrigerator (1990). “He's the best-minded horse to be around. I expected him to run a good time.”
Ochoa's sire, Tres Seis, was the AQHA champion 2-year-old colt in 2001 and ran second to Ausual Suspect in that season's All American Futurity. The Texas-bred gelding is the first starter from his dam, the 8-year-old Stoli mare Stolis Fortune.
Ochoa's victory was his second in three outs. The gelding has earned $44,200, and he ran third, one length behind winner Silver For Me, in the 350-yard, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) on June 12.
Second-fastest qualifier Lotta Love For Robyn is a sorrel filly by all-time leading sire First Down Dash racing for Wayne Barton. The filly is trained by John Bassett, a two-time All American winner with A Delightful Dasher (1999) and Ausual Suspect.
There were eight New Mexico-breds among the 246 2-year-olds who started in this year's All American Futurity trials. However, none of the state-breds made the final.
The All American Futurity final on September 5 will be worth $1.2 million to the owners of the winner. The complete list of qualifiers appears below:
