Osbaldo Remains Undefeated Following NM Breeders' Futurity Score
RSS Feeds Monday, June 06, 2011
Hubaldo Solis' Osbaldo, the fastest qualifier and 3-5 favorite, ran his career-opening winning streak to five following his neck victory in Sunday's $176,040 New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park.

Trained by Oscar Carrete and ridden by Bonifacio Perez, Osbaldo covered 350 yards in :17.258, the third-fastest clocking in the stakes' 27-year history. The victory was the gray homebred colt's second in a stakes, and the $82,739 winner's share of the stakes-record purse pushed his earnings to $223,530.

Osbaldo's victory was accomplished despite a less-than-stellar start.

“He kind of missed the break, but he still got the job done,” said Perez, who has ridden Osbaldo in all of the colt's races. “It was little nerve-racking. I didn't want him to get beat.”

Osbaldo's sire, Jesse James Jr, is a stakes-winning 10-year-old son of AQHA champion Mr Jess Perry. Racing from 2003-06, Jesse James Jr earned $167,275 from 21 starts, and his stakes resume included a second-place finish in the 2003 Golden State Derby (G1) and champion AB What A Runner's '03 Los Alamitos Derby (G1).

Jesse James Jr's dam, the First Down Dash mare Loose Lips, ran second in champion Deceptively's 1992 Kansas Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs and third in that season's Heritage Place Futurity (RG1) at Remington Park, and the stallion is a full brother to Grade 1 winner Jesstified. His progeny include Jess For You, a gelding who ran second to Kiss A Corona in the 2009 Biscayne Stakes for 2-year-olds at Hialeah Park in Florida.

Through May 31, Jesse James Jr has sired 30 starters and the earners of more than $285,500 from three crops. He stands for a $1,500 fee at Mac and Janis Spencer Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.

Osbaldo's dam, Shes So Blazin, is an unraced daughter of Chicks A Blazin. On April 10, the colt scored a nose victory as the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 300-yard, $248,491 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG1) at Sunland Park.

Latest Policy, Preacher James, Wish You Had One To, Black Racket, My Big Chief, Lttle Lighting, Office Babe, and Cat Ta Hoola completed the order of finish. Tenth-fastest qualifier Fury Of The Storm was scratched.

Latest Policy is a bay gelding by Latest Version campaigned by Jose Roberto Munoz Jr. from the barn of Joe R. Chavez. Latest Policy has won one of three starts, a state-bred 350-yard maiden sprint at SunRay on April 23, and he has banked $42,107.

A homebred Brookstone Bay gelding owned by Dick Harp and trained by Jaime Aldavaz, Preacher James posted a half-length victory in the April 9, $75,000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park. Preacher James has earned $59,629 from five outs.
