Osbaldo Wins New Mexican Spring Futurity
RSS Feeds Sunday, April 10, 2011
Osbaldo parlayed a quick start from the rail post into a wire-to-wire victory in the $248,491 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Sunland Park on Saturday.

Trained by Oscar Carrete for breeder and owner Hubaldo Solis of Peralta, New Mexico, Osbaldo covered 300 yards in :14.824 under jockey Bonifacio Perez, who has ridden the gray colt in all three of his starts. Osbaldo's margin of victory was a nose from fastest qualifier and 3-2 favorite PK Bay.

Osbaldo's sire, Jesse James Jr, is a stakes-winning son of 1994 AQHA 2-year-old champion Mr Jess Perry. From 2003-06, he earned $167,275 from five wins in 21 starts, and in '04 he ran second in the Golden State Derby (G1) and third in world champion Be A Bono's Los Alamitos Super Derby (G1).

Now 10, Jesse James Jr stands for a $1,500 fee and is one of five Quarter Horse stallions standing at Mac and Janis Spencer Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.

Osbaldo is the first starter out of the unraced Chicks A Blazin mare Shes So Blazin, and he represents the first stakes winner sired by Jesse James Jr.

Undefeated in three starts, Osbaldo has earned $137,191. The colt began his career on March 5, winning a 300-yard maiden sprint for New Mexico-breds by three-quarters of a length in :15.60. Twenty days later, Osbaldo won a 300-yard Spring Futurity trial by 1 ¾ lengths in :15.05 for the fifth-fastest qualifying time.

Osbaldo was sent to post at odds of 5-1 and returned a $10.40 win mutuel, and the colt and PK Bay combined for a $19.70 ($1) exacta. Third-fastest qualifier Sparklin Royal, a 33-1 longshot, finished third to complete a $314.30 ($1) trifecta.

Chick Town finished fourth and was followed by Cat Ta Hoola, Miner Maniac, Mark West, Perfect Crime, Silver Spike, and WDC Wendys Wine.

PK Bay was coming off of a one-length victory in :14.88 his Spring Futurity trial, which marked his racing debut. The chestnut Brookstone Bay gelding has banked $50,728 for his owners, David Barrett and Sue May of Alto, New Mexico.

A maiden after three outs, Sparklin Royal is a homebred gray daughter of Sixes Royal campaigned by Gary Kloppenburg of Corrales, New Mexico. The $27,334 third-place share of the Spring Futurity purse pushed Sparklin Royal's earnings to $29,604.
