RSS Feeds Monday, July 17, 2017
Making his first start in New Mexico this season, Terry and Irene Stennett’s Percyjones posted the fastest qualifying time to the July 30 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.

On Saturday, Percyjones won the last of four 400-yard trials by one length from fourth-fastest qualifier Mystic Daddy in :19.791. Ricky Ramirez rode the sorrel son of Jesse James Jr for trainer Trey Wood.

Percyjones was bred by Benny and Donna Smith and was stretching out in distance off of his neck victory in a 350-yard, $18,000 allowance dash at Remington Park on May 27. The gelding was coming off of a 2-year-old campaign during which he won three of six outs and banked $155,066 and ran third, a neck behind winner High Plains Perry, in the 400-yard, $1-million Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.

Yudes Jess Dashin, the second-fastest qualifier, won the second trial by a head at odds of 20-1. Ridden by Salvador Martinez for owners Scott Bryant and Justin Joiner and trainer Mike Joiner, the gelded son of Jess A Chicks covered 400 yards in :19.905 while scoring his second win in four starts.

Yudes Jess Dashin was bred by Mike Abraham and sold for $25,000 at the 2015 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs..

This year’s Zia Derby will offer a stakes-record purse of $176,005. The complete list of qualifiers appears below:
