Posies Woodette Tops NM State Fair Breeders’ Derby Finalists
RSS Feeds Saturday, September 11, 2010

David Bloomer’s Posies Woodette, a homebred daughter of the Dash Ta Fame stallion Woodbridge, outran her 10-1 odds to win the second of two New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (RG3) trials at The Downs at Albuquerque on Saturday.

Ridden for the first time by Porfirio Cano for trainer Benjamin Villegas, Posies Woodette covered 400 yards in :19.354, earning a career-best 104 speed index and defeating 4-5 favorite and second-fastest qualifier Corona Memory Crest by a neck. The victory was her second in seven starts, and she has earned $8,785 while racing exclusively in New Mexico.

Posies Woodette is one of 48 starters from five crops sired by Woodbridge, an unraced 11-year-old stallion who has sired the earners of more than $679,000, including Woody Dungarees, a two-time stakes winner and this year’s New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby’s fourth-fastest qualifier. Woodbridge’s half sister, the First Down Dash mare Alice K White, was the AQHA champion 3-year-old filly last season.

Posies Woodette is also one of seven winners from nine starters foaled by Posies, a winning 21-year-old mare by champion Calyx who ran third in the 1991 PCQHRA Breeders’ Futurity (RG2) at Los Alamitos.

Corona Memory Crest, a homebred Corona Caliente gelding racing for Desiree Mooring, was coming off of a second-place finish to Here Kittykittykitty in the August 1, $126,924 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.
