Princess Jesse Returns in Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap
RSS Feeds Thursday, March 02, 2017
Princess Jesse, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr owned and trained by Vance Mikkelson of Belen, New Mexico, will make her 4-year-old season debut in Saturday’s 350-yard, $85,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Princess Jesse will be shortening in distance off of her head victory in the 400-yard, $85,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap (RG2) for state-bred distaffers at Sunland Park on December 31. The mare boasts a three-race win streak that includes a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length victory in the September 25, 400-yard New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Princess Jesse drew the rail post and will be ridden by Alfredo Sigala. Other contenders include Seeyalateralligator, a homebred 5-year-old son of Winners Version trained by Wes Giles for owners Ezra Lee and Jason Giles. Seeyalateralligator is coming off of a neck victory as the 2-1 favorite in the 440-yard, $85,000 Dona Ana County Handicap (R) on January 29.

The 3-1 morning-line favorite, Seeyalateralligator drew post 5 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez.

Yaneth Cabrera’s Jess Cruzin On By, the runner-up to Seeyalateralligator in the Dona Ana County Handicap, drew post 10 and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr. for trainer Alfredo Gomez. A homebred 4-year-old stallion by Jesse James Jr, Jess Cruzin On By has banked $211,087 from 11 career outs, and he was a finalist in last year’s 440-yard, $206,000 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) at Zia Park.
