Princess Jesse Tops New Mexico State Fair Derby Qualifiers
RSS Feeds Monday, September 12, 2016
Princess Jesse, a homebred Jesse James Jr filly owned and trained by Vance Mikkelson, is the fastest qualifier to the September 25, $100,000-added New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs.

Ridden by Alfredo Sigala, Princess Jesse won the first of two 400-yard trials by one length in :19.550. The filly was winning for the fifth time in 11 outs and pushing her earnings to $161,000, of which $114,840 has been banked this year.

Princess Jesse was coming off of a Ruidoso Downs campaign during which she defeated older state-bred competition in the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Handicap (RG2) on July 31. Earlier this year, the filly scored a neck victory in the 350-yard, $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3) for state-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.

Second-fastest qualifier Chickaloni won the second heat by neck in :19.641. Jose Enrique Ortiz rode the graded stakes winning Jess A Chicks filly for brothers David Hinkins and Ross Hinkins of Orangevale, Utah, and trainer Larry Chavez.

Chickaloni was acquired as a yearling for $7,500 at the 2014 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, and she has earned $223,873 from 12 starts. Chickaloni is a half sister to Machismo Moon, who on Saturday recorded the fastest qualifying time to the September 25, $100,000-added La Fiesta Futurity at this track.
