RSS Feeds Monday, April 4, 2016
Princess Jesse earned her first career stakes win in the April 3, $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-bred sophomore fillies at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Alejandro Medellin and sent to post as the 5-2 second choice in the field of nine, Princess Jesse went 350 yards in :17.462, and her winning margin was a neck from 2-1 favorite Teana Fay. Eric Mikkelson prepped the homebred filly for his father, owner Vance Mikkelson of Belen, New Mexico.

Princess Jesse was coming off of a second-place finish, a head behind Teana Fay, in the 400-yard, $85,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG3) at Sunland on February 28. The filly’s sire, Jesse James Jr, is a stakes-winning and multiple Grade 1-placed son of ’94 AQHA champion 2-year-old Mr Jess Perry.

Now 15, Jesse James Jr has sired the earners of more than $9.5 million from six crops, including 2015 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly Astica and multiple graded stakes winners Osbaldo, Cinco Menudos, and Jess Rueben James. A full brother to 2006 Retama Park Derby (G1) winner Jesstified, the stallion is owned by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico, and he stands for a $4,500 fee at MJ Farms.

Princess Jesse’s dam, Total Miracle, is a winning and 15-year-old daughter of ’98 champion aged stallion Dean Miracle. Racing primarily in New Mexico from 2003-06, Total Miracle won six of 21 starts and banked $76,898, and she ran second to Chicks Rimen Native in the ’05 New Mexico Quarter Horse Breeders’ Championship (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Princess Jesse has won three of her seven outs, and the $51,000 winner’s share of the Sunburst Stakes purse increased her earnings to $115,860, of which $69,700 has been banked this season. In addition to running second to Teana Fay in the NMHBA Stakes, the filly finished fourth, 1 3/4 lengths behind winner RG Miracle, in the 350-yard, $102,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park.

Princess Jesse returned a $7.60 win mutuel and teamed with Teana Fay for a $2 exacta payoff of $23.40. Msferrari Edition, a 26-1 longshot, ran third, 1 1/4 lengths behind Princess Jesse, to complete a $230.20 ($1) trifecta.

JJ Jessies Girl finished fourth and was followed by Serena James, Carson City Girl, RF Jessies Girl, Shes A Blazin Winner, and Ms Blu Moon.

A $25,000 buy at the 2014 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Teana Fay races for cousins Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vasquez. The graded stakes winning sorrel daughter of the Holland Ease stallion Winners Version has won two of 12 starts and has banked $131,517, and her resume includes a second-place finish in last year’s New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.

Msferrari Edition is campaigned by Evaristo M. Sanchez, who also bred the sorrel filly by the Mr Jess Perry stallion First Prize Boston. Msferrari Edition has earned $24,429 from four outs, and her race record includes a half-length victory as the 2-1 favorite in a 300-yard, $23,580 maiden-special-weight dash for New Mexico-bred 3-year-olds on February 26.
