Pulgarcito, a bay gelding by the Mr. Prospector stallion Greatness, scored his first stakes victory in Sunday’s $55,000 Governor’s Cup Stakes for 2-year-olds at Zia Park.
Racing for the Heiligbrodt Racing Stable of Houston, Texas, Pulgarcito covered 6 furlongs in 1:10.84 while defeating Race For Jake by two lengths. Ken Tohill rode the gelding for trainer Steve Asmussen.
Pulgarcito is one of four stakes winners from 103 starters sired by Greatness, an 11-year-old winning stallion and half brother to three-time listed stakes winner Holzmeister. A Kentucky-bred, Greatness has sired the earners of more than $4.5 million from four crops. He is owned by a syndicate and stands for a $5,000 fee at Ghost Ridge Farms at Felton, Pennsylvania.
Pulgarcito is also one of eight winners from as many starters produced by the Storm Cat mare Cat Attack. Now 19, Cat Attack won the 1993 Sorority Stakes (G3) for 2-year-old fillies at Monmouth Park, and her foals include Pick Of The Pack, a half sister to Pulgarcito who won the ’03 Lindsay Frolic Stakes at Calder Racecourse in Miami, and the stakes-placed Lil’s Lad filly Power Pack.
Pulgarcito’s second dam, Harp Springs (FR), was a winning daughter of the Klairon stallion Luthier (FR). A 1978 foal, Harp Springs produced 12 winners from 13 starters, and she was a half sister to European Group 3 winners Rose Of Montreaux (GB) and Bay Street (GB).
Pulgarcito has won two of four races, and the $33,000 winner’s share of the Governor’s Cup purse increased his bankroll to $61,170. The gelding was coming off of a fifth-place finish in the 6-furlong Kip Deville Stakes at Remington Park on October 8.
The Heiligbrodt Racing Stable and Asmussen also teamed to win last week’s $55,000 Permian Basin Stakes for 2-year old fillies with the Valid Expectations filly Fastation.
Jam’n Jackson ran third, 2 ¾ lengths behind runner-up Race For Jake. Mason’s Pegasus, Secret Admiral, and Hidden Recipe completed the order of finish.
Race For Jake is a Kentucky-bred gelding by Grand Slam racing for Brian Mundell of El Paso, Texas. A $6,000 buy at the Barretts Equine Ltd. Mixed Sale in January, Race For Jake has earned $39,490 from three outs, and his two victories include the October 3, 7-furlong A.C. Kemp Stakes at The Downs at Albuquerque.
Jam’n Jackson was 20 days removed from a 6-furlong maiden victory at Zia Park in his career debut. The Kentucky-bred chestnut colt by Flower Alley races for breeders Harold and Pamela Tillema of Corona, California.
