RSS Feeds Thursday, March 17, 2016
Rising Giant, a 5-year-old The Way Home gelding owned by Judge Lanier Racing, will seek his second stakes victory of the current meet in Saturday’s $85,000 New Mexico State University Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.

Rising Giant will be making his first start since January 16, when he scored a half-length victory at odds of 8-1 in the 1 1/16-mile, $85,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap (R). The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by Enrique Gomez for trainer Simon Buechler.

Streaks Bro, the 3-1 morning-line favorite, drew post 7 and will be ridden by Ry Eikleberry for owner Maurcenia Cross and trainer Gray Gross. A homebred 4-year-old son of Elijah’s Song, the gelding faces New Mexico-breds again after a second-place finish, 2 3/4 lengths behind winner Ol Winedrinker Who, in the February 28, 1 1/16-mile Curribot Handicap at Sunland.

Other New Mexico State University Handicap contenders include D E Lover and Song Of Laura. D E Lover is a 5-year-old So Long Birdie gelding racing for Leroy Martinez and trainer Tony Sedillo, and he came off of a seven-month layoff to finish second, 1 3/4 lengths behind winner Citizen Geller, in the 4 1/2-furlong, $85,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap (R) on March 1.

D E Lover has earned $62,156 from five outs the last two seasons, and his two wins include a 2 1/2-length score in the July 26, 5 1/2-furlong Sierrra Blanca Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding, who is untested at this 1-mile and 70-yard trip, drew post 3 and will be ridden by Frank Reyes.

Song Of Laura is a homebred 4-year-old son of Song Of Navarone trained by Todd Fincher for owner Barbara M. Coleman of Farmington, New Mexico. The gelding has finished third in two state-bred stakes during the current meet, including the Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap.

Glen Murphy will ride Song Of Laura from post 6.
