Ruidoso Downs’ 60-day summer season opens with 19 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trials on Friday. Post time for the first race is 11 a.m. (MDT).
A total of 189 2-year-olds have been entered in the trials, including West Texas Futurity (G1) winner No Dice Special and runner-up First Class Lacy B, and Remington Park Futurity (G1) runner-up American Runaway.
A gelding by champion and 2000 All American Futurity (G1) winner Eyesa Special, No Dice Special brings a two-race win streak into the Ruidoso Futurity trials. No Dice Special races for VWP Jr. Inc. from the barn of John Stinebaugh, and he has earned $150,100 and currently ranks third in the current AQHA Racing/Horseplayer PRO 2-year-old poll.
First Class Lacy B finished a nose behind No Dice Special as the 2-1 favorite and second-fastest qualifier in the West Texas. The filly by champion Mr Jess Perry races for Bielau Oaks, and she ranks fifth in the 2-year-old poll.
The sixth-ranked horse in the 2-year-old poll, American Runaway hasn’t raced since April 17, when he ran second, a nose behind winner Llano Teller, in the $596,041 Remington Park Futurity. The colt by champion Ocean Runaway races for Sammy Martinez and Johnny Martinez and is trained by eight-time AQHA champion trainer Paul Jones.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity final on June 13. The Ruidoso Futurity is the first leg of the All American Triple Crown, which also consists of the Rainbow (G1) and All American (G1) futurities.
