RSS Feeds Saturday, March 26, 2011

Gerardo Ochoa's Rylees Boy is the fastest qualifier to the April 10, $110,000-added Bank of America Sunland Challenge (G2).

Sent to post as the 11-10 favorite in the second of three trials, Rylees Boy went 440 yards in :20.769 while defeating sixth-fastest qualifier Honor Me Good by 1 ½ lengths for his 15th win in 32 starts. The $6,000 winner's share of the purse boosted the 6-year-old Heza Motor Scooter gelding's earnings to $404,833.

Joe Ruiz rode Rylees Boy for trainer Gerardo Pena-Ochoa.

Last year, Rylees Boy put together a four-race win streak that included the Bank of America Sunland Challenge (G1). He ended his 2010 campaign by finishing third, a half of a length behind champion Noconi, in the 400-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park.

Second-fastest qualifier Shakem Blue, a 4-year-old gelding by champion Jess Louisiana Blue racing for Dan and Jolene Urschel, won the first heat by two lengths for his sixth victory in 18 outs. Shakem Blue has a four-race win streak dating back to November 30.
