RSS Feeds Saturday, January 28, 2017
A full field of 12 New Mexico-bred Quarter Horses, including two also-eligible entries, has been entered in Sunday’s 440-yard, $85,000 Dona Ana County Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.

Seeyalateralligator, a 5-year-old son of Winners Version trained by Wes Giles for owners Ezra Lee and Jason Giles, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. An earner of $301,347 from 17 outs, the gelding ended his 4-year-old campaign with a one-length victory in the 440-yard, $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) on December 17.

Seeyalateralligator drew post 9 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez. His opponents include Yaneth Cabrera’s Klassic Strawfly, an 11-year-old Genuine Strawfly gelding trained by Miguel Castillo. Last year, Klassic Strawfly assembled a five-race win streak that included the 440-yard, $170,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on October 29.

Klassic Strawfly is coming off of a 2016 season during which he won six of eight starts and banked $208,290. Manuel Gutierrez will ride Klassic Strawfly from post 8.

Other contenders include Juan E. Poblano’s Justified By Chicks. A 7-year-old gray son of Chicks A Blazin trained by Raul Vega, the gelding is coming off of a second-place finish to Seeyalateralligator in the Jess Burner.

Justified By Chicks drew post 7 and will be ridden by reigning AQHA champion jockey Esgar Ramirez.
