Seeyalateralligator Wins Jess Burner Memorial
RSS Feeds Saturday, December 17, 2016
Seeyalateralligator, a 4-year-old son of Winners Version racing for Ezra Lee and Jason Giles, sprinted to a one-length victory in Saturday’s $85,000 Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Salvador Martinez for trainer Wes Giles and aided by a reported 30-mph head wind, Seeyalateralligator covered 400 yards in :19.111 and posted a 97 speed index. The $51,000 winner’s share of the purse from his second career stakes win bumped his earnings to $301,347.

Seeyalateralligator was bred by Carolyn Giles. The gelding’s sire, Winners Version, is a 12-year-old graded stakes winning son of Holland Ease. Racing in New Mexico and California from 2008-09, Winners Version earned $399,057 from 17 starts, and his five wins included a clear 1 3/4-length score in the ’09 Hobbs America Derby (G3) at Zia Park.

Winners Version also was a finalist in all three of Ruidoso Downs’ Grade 1 futurities during his juvenile campaign. A full brother to two stakes winners, including Grade 3 winner Texas Version, he has sired the earners of more than $2.3 million from three crops, including graded stakes winner Teana Fay. The stallion is owned by A & C Racing and Roping, and he will stand the 2017 season for a $3,000 fee at Kim Saunders’ Sierra Blanca Equine at Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico.

Seeyalateralligator’s dam, Stars In My Eye, is an unraced 12-year-old daughter of the Dash For Cash stallion Mr Eye Opener. The gelding’s second dam, the winning Lanes Leinster mare Plan A Star, was a finalist in the 1996 Diamond Classic Futurity (RG1) at the Central Wyoming Fair meet.

Seeyalateralligator was shortening in distance off of his second-place finish in the 440-yard, $170,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Cup Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on October 30. Raced exclusively in New Mexico, he has won four of 17 starts, including last year’s 400-yard, $85,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG2) at Sunland.

Justified By Chicks finished second, a neck in front of third-place finisher Play Misty Foreme. Klassic Strawfly, the 7-5 favorite in the full field of 10, ran fourth and was followed by Dungarees Version, Major Moonflash, Booyah Bay, Osbaldo, Fire Stones, and Cinco Menudos.

A 6-year-old son of Chicks A Blazin, Justified By Chicks races for Juan E. Poblano. The gray gelding has won six of 32 starts, and his resume includes a third-place finish in last year’s 440-yard, $60,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Championship (RG3) at Albuquerque Downs. The $18,700 runner-up share of the Jess Burner purse bumped Justified By Chicks’ bankroll to $167,037, of which $84,228 has been pocketed his year.

Play Misty Foreme is owned by Robert D. Smith. A $22,000 yearling buy at the 2014 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the gelded son of Jesse James Jr and the graded stakes winning Blushing Bug mare Arbor Mist has won four of his 12 outs, including the 400-yard, $164,000 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs on July 31, and he has earned $128,278.
