RSS Feeds Tuesday, May 23, 2017
Seis Menudos, a 6-year-old son of Southern Corona owned by Eloy Humberto Pena, is one of eight New Mexico-bred sprinters entered in Friday's 400-yard, $40,000 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) at SunRay Park.

An earner of $58,370 from two outs this season, Seis Menudos will be stretching out in distance off of his upset victory at 14-1 odds in the 350-yard, $85,000 Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap (RG2) at Sunland Park on March 4. The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by J. Martin Bourdieu.

Other contenders include David and Sandra Barrett's Carson City Girl, a 4-year-old daughter of Woodbridge trained by Fred Danley and the lone distaffer in the field. Carson City Girl is coming off of a sophomore campaign during which the mare banked $157,050 from eight starts and scored a head victory in the 400-yard, $40,000 New Mexico Breeders' Stakes (RG2) at SunRay.

Carson City Girl drew post 4 and will be ridden by Alfredo Sigala.

Jess Cruzin On By is coming off of a Sunland Park campaign during which the 4-year-old Jesse James Jr stallion ran second in two New Mexico-bred stakes, including the Mesilla Valley Speed Handicap. Jess Cruzin On By drew post 8 and will be ridden by Ruben Calderon for owner Miguel Castillo Calsadillas and trainer Juan Q. Gutierrez.

The Jimmy Drake Stakes is contested annually at SunRay Park and honors the memory of Jimmy Drake, a longtime resident of Farmington who died in 2011. Drake served as president of the New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association, as well as on the state racing commission from 1980-85, and he was instrumental in the opening of San Juan Downs Racetrack in '85.
