Seven Stakes on Tap This Weekend at The Downs at Albuquerque

The New Mexico State Fair portion of The Downs at Albuquerque meet ends this weekend with seven stakes races for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, including six that are restricted to state-breds.

On Saturday, the Albuquerque track will play host to three stakes – the 400-yard, $50,000-added New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies; the 400-yard, $50,000-added New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings; and the 1 1/16-mile, $50,000 New Mexico State Fair Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes (R) for state-bred 3-year-olds.

Sunday's four New Mexico-bred stakes are the 400-yard, $50,000-added New Mexico State Fair Breeders' Derby (RG3) for state-bred 3-year-olds; the 6-furlong, $50,000-added George Maloof Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings; the 6-furlong, $50,000-added Dessie & Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies; and the 1 1/8-mile, $40,000 New Mexico State Fair Handicap for open 3-year-olds and older.

Sunday's card includes the $10,000 Con Jackson Claiming Stakes. Run at the unique distance of 1 13/16 miles, the Con Jackson has attracted a field of 10, including Cody Kelley's Service Hawk, an 8-year-old gelding who has won four races this season, including two during the recently concluded Prairie Meadows meet in Iowa.

Post time for the first race on both Saturday and Sunday is 1:30 p.m. (MDT). Following is a preview of all seven stakes:


NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR SENORITA FUTURITY (RG3)

Fastest qualifier Fysta drew post 7 for the New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity final. A gray daughter of Gonna Ro Sham Bo racing for David Hinkins and Ross Hinkins and trained by Wes Giles, Fysta broke her maiden with a three-quarter length victory in the first of three trials on September 9.

Medrano), 20-1; Yawl Coming (Cody Jensen), 5-1; RL Fugaz Apls (Miguel Perez), 20-1; Two Bit Corona (J. Martin Bourdieu), 4-1; Office Babe (Porfirio Cano), 8-1; Angelina Fame (Efrain Gonzalez), 8-1; Fysta (Tony Guymon), 3-1; Blowin Dust (Freddie Martinez), 20-1; Sparklin Royal (Ruben Calderon), 5-2; and Imojackie (Chris Zamora), 20-1.


NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS' STAKES (R)

Michael Stinson's Attitude E Racer, the 5-2 morning-line favorite, is coming off of a third-place finish against open company in the 1 1/16-mile, $40,000 Ruidoso Thoroughbred Derby at Ruidoso Downs on September 4. A bay gelding by Desert God, Attitude E Racer has earned $139,804 from eight starts, and his three wins include $100,000 New Mexico Breeders' Derby (R) at Sunland Park on March 27.

Martin Bourdieu, 118), 5-1; Deity (Jimmy Coates, 117), 6-1; Jenna's Miracle (Miguel Hernandez, 117), 4-1; and Running Squall (Alfredo Juarez Jr., 118), 6-1.


NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR SENOR FUTURITY (RG3)

Hubaldo Solis' Osbaldo puts his undefeated record on the line in this year's New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity. A homebred colt by Jesse James Jr, Osbaldo has won all six of his starts, including the $248,491 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park and the $176,040 New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG2) at SunRay Park, and his earnings total $226,530.

Martin Bourdieu), 8-1; and Emerson Biggins (Efrain Gonzalez), 6-1.


NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR BREEDERS' DERBY (RG3) 

Fastest qualifier Visible Injun, a homebred gelding by Invisible Injun racing for Verona Vaughn of Edgewood, New Mexico, drew post 7 in the full field of 10 sophomore Quarter Horses. Visible Injun broke his maiden with a 1 3/4-length win in the second of two trials on September 10.

Trainer Fred Danley, a two-time winner of this stakes, will send out three starters on Sunday, including second-fastest qualifier Pakea Bay and third-fastest qualifier Wilmon.

GEORGE MALOOF FUTURITY (R)

The undefeated Oak Barrel is one of 12 New Mexico-bred colts and gelding entered back in the George Maloof Futurity. A homebred colt by Super Quercus (FR) racing for Dr. Miguel Gallegos' Gallegos del Norte Racing of Albuquerque, Oak Barrel is coming off of a neck victory in the last of three trials on September 10.

NEW MEXICO STATE FAIR HANDICAP

The only open stakes this weekend, the New Mexico State Fair Handicap has drawn a field of six older horses. Paul B. Thomason's Quiet Again, a homebred 6-year-old gelding by 1998 Kentucky Derby (G1) Real Quiet, has been assigned high weight of 123 pounds by racing secretary Jim Collins. Quiet Again has won two stakes this season, and he is coming off of a second-place finish as the 7-10 favorite in the September 5, $50,000 Ruidoso Thoroughbred Championship.

The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey and weight assignments and morning-line odds – Agab (Daniel Aguilar, 115), 10-1; Infinite Resource (Alfredo Juarez Jr., 121), 9-5; Scorewithcater (Enrique Gomez, 117), 4-1; Quiet Again (Ken Tohill, 123), 8-5; Stonewall Riot (Natasha Banks, 114), 10-1; and Fox In The House (Enrique Garcia, 116), 8-1.


DESSIE AND FERN SAWYER FUTURITY (R)

A full field of 12, including Dan Delaney's Sandia Sonata and Rita Danley's Roll Bloomers Roll, are set to square off in the Dessie and Fern Sawyer Futurity. A $1,400 buy at last year's New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, Sandia Sonata has earned $44,498 from three wins in five starts, and her stakes resume includes a second-place finish to Our Flying Angel in the July 31, $156,290 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs. Roll Bloomers Roll won the fillies division of the April 16, $125,166 Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park, and her bankroll totals $85,308.
