Shining Source Headlines SunRay’s Jack Cole Stakes

Shining Source, a stakes winner during the 2016-17 Sunland Park meet, heads a field of six New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds in Monday’s 1-mile, $40,000 Jack Cole Stakes (R) at SunRay Park.

Racing for Barton Racing Stables LLC and trainer Blake Rust, Shining Source has earned $65,048 from four outs this year, and his season resume includes a one-length victory in the March 18, $85,000 New Mexico State University Handicap (R) at 1 mile and 70 yards. The 6-year-old son of Source is the 5-2 morning-line favorite and will be ridden by Elvin Gonzalez from post 4.

Other contenders include multiple stakes winners Weather Dodger and That’s Who. A homebred 5-year-old Weather Warning gelding trained by Joel Marr for owner Lisa M. Rehburg of Mountain Center, California, Weather Dodger is coming off of a Sunland meet during which he rallied for a three-quarter length win in the 1 1/16-mile, $85,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap (R) on January 14.

Weather Dodger drew post 2 and will be ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr.

That’s Who is a homebred 8-year-old son of Quinton’s Gold campaigned by Sam and Latane Stevens of Lamesa, Texas. Trained by Todd Fincher, the gelding has won nine stakes and has earned $806,482 from 42 outs, and he has won four of his six starts at SunRay Park, including the 2014 Jack Cole Stakes..

That’s Who drew post 5 and will be ridden by Tracy Hebert.

Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
