Sent to post as the 9-5 favorite, Shivers Me held on at the wire to win Sunday’s 1 1/8-mile, $40,000 New Mexico State Fair Handicap at The Downs at Albuquerque.
Don Frazier rode Shivers Me for owners Jeff Haylett and Jason Haylett and trainer Ty Garrett. The 4-year-old colt covered his 1 1/8-mile trip in 1:51.44, and his margin of victory was a nose from Dunscombe.
Shivers Me was bred in Idaho by Vickie Cook, and the colt is one of 27 winners from 43 starters sired by the late Coastal Voyage, a Kentucky-bred son of the Majestic Prince stallion Coastal who won the Sierra Madre (G3) and San Simeon (G3) handicaps at Santa Anita Park in 1990. To date, Coastal Voyage has sired the earners of more than $1.48 million from 14 crops.
Shivers Me’s dam, Crypt’s Tail, is a winning 19-year-old daughter of Cryptoclearance. Crypt’s Tail has foaled five winners from eight starters, including Crypts Seeker, a gelding by Suave Prospect who won the 2006 Idaho Cup Juvenile Championship (R) at Les Bois Park and the ’07 Albuquerque Derby in New Mexico.
Shivers Me’s second dam, Shocking Moment, was a Louisiana-bred daughter of the Crafty Admiral stallion Info who produced 14 winners from 17 starters. Her third foal to race, the Our Michael colt Bigloadtocarry, won the 1986 Heritage Stakes (R) for Illinois-breds at Balmoral Park near Chicago and earned $274,779 from 97 starts from 1986-92.
Shivers Me traces back to his fourth dam, Magic Melody. A 1949 foal by the High Time stallion Zacaweista, Magic Melody produced stakes winners Melody Mine and Laurel Mae.
All told, Shivers Me has won six of 12 races, and the $24,000 winner’s share of the New Mexico State Fair Handicap purse increased his earnings to $83,151. The colt’s stakes resume includes a third-place run in the August 15, 1 1/8-mile Arapahoe Park Classic Stakes. He also won the 7-furlong Front Range Stakes at Arapahoe on the Fourth of July.
Dance To The Star ran third, 3 ¼ lengths behind Shivers Me. Silver Matthias, If It Stays Fair, Wild Union, and Call Transfer completed the order of finish.
Runner-up Dunscombe was claimed by T.J. Monsen and trainer Ray Ashford Jr. for $12,500 at Prairie Meadows on July 2. The 6-year-old Graeme Hall gelding earned $8,000 to push his career bankroll to $184,260 from 12 wins in 41 outs. On September 6, Dunscombe ran third, four lengths behind winner Quiet Again, in the 1 1/16-mile, $50,000 Ruidoso Thoroughbred Championship Stakes.
Dance To The Star banked $4,000 to boost his earnings to $72,508 for owner Francis A. Heckendorf Jr. A homebred 4-year-old gelding by the Dehere stallion Soto, Dance To The Star has won three stakes at Arapahoe Park, including last year’s 1 1/16-mile Colorado Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Derby (R), and the 6-furlong CTBA Futurity (R) in ’08.
